What gets counted
A "word" is any run of non-whitespace characters separated by spaces, tabs, or line breaks. Sentences are detected by terminal punctuation (. ! ?). Paragraphs are separated by blank lines. Reading time uses an average adult silent reading speed of around 225 words per minute — the real number varies a lot by content and reader.
Common use cases
Hitting an essay word count, sizing a Tweet or LinkedIn post, estimating how long a script will run, or checking the length of a meta description before publishing.
