How much should you tip?
In the U.S., 15–20% of the pre-tax bill is typical for sit-down restaurants, with 18% being a common default. Counter service, takeout, and quick coffee runs are usually lower or optional. Outside the U.S., norms vary widely — many countries already include service in the bill.
Splitting the bill
The fairest way to split a shared meal is even shares of the total, including tip. If a couple of orders were dramatically larger or smaller, settle those items separately first, then split the remainder.
