How percentage math works

A percentage is a fraction out of 100. 15% of 80 means multiply 80 by 15/100, which is 12. To find what percent one number is of another, divide the part by the whole and multiply by 100. Percent change is (new − old) ÷ old × 100, and is negative when the new value is smaller than the old.
