About BMI

Body Mass Index is weight (kg) divided by height (m) squared. It was designed as a quick population-level screening tool, not a diagnostic. Because it ignores muscle mass, body composition, age, sex, and ethnicity, BMI can over-classify muscular people as "overweight" and under-classify older adults who have lost muscle but kept fat.

For most adults, BMI is a useful rough check rather than a verdict — a healthcare professional can interpret it alongside waist circumference, blood pressure, and lab work.

WHO BMI categories (adults)

  • Under 18.5 — Underweight
  • 18.5 to 24.9 — Normal weight
  • 25 to 29.9 — Overweight
  • 30 and above — Obesity
