How the calendar math works

The tool counts whole calendar years first, then months, then days — the same way you'd say "I'm 34 years, 5 months, and 12 days old." Months don't all have 30 or 31 days, so when the days-of-month don't line up the calculator borrows from the previous month's actual length (including February in leap years).
